SSE Ireland has published the latest annual review of our employee-led volunteering programme, Be the Difference.
The review looks back on the volunteering and fundraising activities of our employees across the island of Ireland during our last financial year.
The volunteering programme gives every employee the chance to take at least one day away from their usual schedule to help a charity or community group of their choice, and up to four additional days throughout the year.
Last year was our biggest and best to date, with around 85% of all employees taking part and supporting 49 worthy causes.
The Be the Difference programme also helps volunteers support charities and community groups financially, through a matched funding scheme. Employees are entitled to apply for matched funding once a year, and successful applicants will have their fundraising efforts matched up to €200/£150. This year employees raised around €8,500 through matched funding for causes close to their hearts.
Stephen Wheeler, SSE Ireland Managing Director, said:
“At SSE Ireland, we strive to make a positive difference to the communities in which we live and work. I’m incredibly proud of the record-breaking volunteering efforts of our colleagues in our last financial year, making a real difference for causes close to their hearts. With nearly 6,000 hours volunteered, it’s clear that the programme really matters to our employees.
“The Be the Difference programme continues to go from strength to strength, with last year seeing our highest participation rates to date. This was thanks, in no small part, to our proud partnership with Make-A-Wish Ireland, which accounted for over 60% of our volunteering activities. We’re delighted to be helping this extraordinary charity create magical experiences for children and young people fighting life-threatening illnesses.
“I want to take this opportunity to say a huge thank you to all our volunteers, fundraisers, charity partners and champions, for making the programme what it is, and embodying SSE Ireland’s commitment to doing the right thing.”
Our Be the Difference programme is one of the practices that led to SSE Ireland last month being certified by Business in the Community Ireland to the Business Working Responsibly Mark, the ‘gold standard’ for Corporate Social Responsibility and Sustainability in Ireland.
