10 Top Tips to keep your home safe and warm

At SSE Airtricity, safety is our number one concern. In your home, safety comes first. Check out some of our top tips to stay safe while using and maintaining your gas appliances.

  1. It’s the perfect time to get a boiler service before winter.
  2. Only use a registered engineer to fit, fix, and service your appliances. You can check the Gas Safe Register in Northern Ireland or the Register for Gas Installers in the Republic of Ireland  If you smell gas in your area contact the emergency gas number on 0800 085 8851 in Northern Ireland or 1850 20 50 50 in the Republic of Ireland.
  3. Check both sides of your engineer’s Registered ID card. Make sure they are qualified for the work you need doing. You can find this information on the back of the card.
  4. Have all your gas appliances regularly serviced and safety checked every year. If you rent your home ask your landlord for a copy of the current Gas Safety Record for the property.
  5. Know the six signs of carbon monoxide (CO) poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. Unsafe gas appliances can put you at risk of CO poisoning, gas leaks, fires and explosions.
  6. Check gas appliances for warning signs that they are not working properly e.g. lazy yellow flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks or stains on or around the appliance, and excessive condensation in the room.
  7. Install an audible carbon monoxide alarm in your home. This will alert you if carbon monoxide is detected.
  8. Keep vents and chimneys clear. Make sure you don't block any vents, as they are vital to ensure gas appliances burn properly, and chimneys need to be cleaned and checked on a regular basis.
  9. Only use gas appliances only for their intended purpose. Don't be tempted to use them for something they weren't meant for (e.g using a gas cooker to heat a room).
  10. Spread the word. Share vital gas safety information with friends, family, and neighbours to make sure your community stays safe.
